Jeffrey Flax with the D.C. Federal Public Defender's office has an interesting site with many, many legal links. Take a look at the jflax site.

Mental health

The Mental Health Advocacy Center is a Louisiana organization to aid citizens who feel they have been wrongfully committed to a mental institution.

"Pro bono" free or reduced fee services

Central Louisiana Pro Bono Project: Rapides, Vernon and Avoyelles parishes services for those who pass federal poverty screening guidelines. No criminal cases are accepted. 318-499-9778

Southeast Louisiana Legal Services provide free legal services for the poor, elderly, or victims of domestic violence. You must live in Livingston, St. Tammany, Washington, St. Helena, or Tangipahoa parishes.

Notaries

Louisiana notaries have more powers than any other state. They can make wills and much more. For more information, visit the Louisiana Notary Association.

Private Detectives

Louisiana-Detectives.com is a good place to find out more about private investigations. Even if you are not located in the greater New Orleans area, which is where Retired USAR Counterintelligence Colonel David W. Kuebler established the home base of Louisiana-Detectives, it has a great deal of interesting information about investigations.

Attorney complaints

Complaints against attorneys in Louisiana are handled exclusively by the Disciplinary Counsel. Go to our attorney complaint page on this topic.

Child support enforcement

Support Enforcement Services is the place to find help when it comes to questions about child support and paternity issues. The program is administered by the Department of Social Services, Office of Family Support, Child Support Enforcement Services (SES). Their site also lists the 12 regional offices located in Louisiana.

Louisiana Legislature

This is the place where the laws are made. For any information about pending bills, passed legislation, or how to contact your Senator or Representative, go to the Louisiana Legislature web site.

The Louisiana Law Institute, which is part of the LSU Law School, "...is organized for scholarly discussions of current problems in Louisiana law and particularly the projects under consideration by the Council, and for bringing together representatives of the legislature, members of the bench and bar, and representatives of the law-teaching profession."

Louisiana Supreme Court

Want to do your own legal research? Among other things, the Supreme Court's web site lets you search its database of Louisiana cases. Each of Louisiana's circuit courts also have web sites, but the reporting capabilities of those sites are not fully implemented. We will keep you informed when we feel the reporting is reliable. United States Supreme Court

The Cornell Law School has the best web page for reporting and analyzing Supreme Court decisions.

Consumer fraud

The Louisiana Department of Justice is the place to start for the latest on consumer fraud issues.

If you are specifically concerned about automobile fraud, the Auto Fraud Section of the Department of Justice covers odometer cheating, used car sales, auto repair and other issues. For problems with the purchase of a new car, see the lemon law article here at La-Legal.

The Federal Trade Commission put together an interesting web site called Ultimate Prosperity which is an example of how some fraudulent web sites operate. It then provides tips on avoiding scams. You can also file a complaint from this site.
